National Teams

The teams that represent the UK at ultimate are coordinated by UK Ultimate. These teams continue to play under the name "Great Britain Ultimate" (GB).

GB players continue to meet virtually all of the costs associated with playing for their country. The Junior squads normally receive a limited amount of direct funding from UKU.

We are very grateful to the companies and individuals that sponsor GB teams and/or individuals - their support makes a big difference to our players.

There are GB teams in all of the divisions that currently exist in international ultimate. The senior divisions are: Women, Open, Mixed, Masters; and the Junior divisions are: Women (U19, U17) and Open (U19, U17).  As of 2010 WFDF announced the creation of a new Under-23 division, and the first World Championships in these divisions will happen during July 2010 in Florence, Italy.  The U23 event will see teams in Open, Women and Mixed divisions.

UKU is now looking for applications for the following roles with GB-Ultimate in 2010.

The selection decision will made by the Junior Committee and Nick Sampson, the current Team Manager of the Junior Open squad.

GB Junior Open Coach Application Form

Please note that due to the nature of the role, additional information will be sought from leading candidates, including seeking references specific to working with young people.

Team Manager - Under 23s

The UKU Board will appoint a group of appropriate players/ex-players to review the applications.  Our goal is to appoint all positions as quickly as possible with a target date of end of Jan 2010.

Applicants are welcome to propose organising the management/captaincy and coaching of the squad in whatever structure they believe will produce the best result.  We do not necessarily assume that the “best result” means the highest possible finish at U23 World Championships.

We are keen to make the most of the opportunity that the U23 division presents in terms of providing experience for players that have a good chance or playing for the Full squads in the future.  For this reason we would like an indication from anyone considering putting themselves forward to run the senior squads in 2011-12, even if you do not want to apply for the U23 management role in 2010.

Proposed timeline:
FRI 15th JAN 2010.  Notifications of interest to admin@ukultimate.com
MON 25th JAN 2010.  Final deadline for full applications

GB U23

The UKU and the Great Britain U23 Coaching Team are now accepting applications for players to try out for all three teams looking to attend the U23 World Championships. The tournament will be taking place in Florence, Italy between the 19th-25th of July 2010 and we will be looking to enter a team into all three divisions - open, women's and mixed.

If you were born between 1987 and 1991 (i.e. you are 18 or over at the start of this year and remain 23 or under throughout 2010) and interested in playing for one of the three Great Britain teams going to Florence then please read on as we'd love to hear from you.

We will be running a trials session on the 20th & 21st of February in Leeds (further details will be sent out on invitation) and we want to hear from anyone who would be interested in trying out for the squad, whether you can attend the session or not. There will also be representation from the coaching team at university mixed indoor nationals and university outdoor nationals.

Selection will be split into three stages:

Stage 1 - Initial selection by application. This will be based on what's on the application as well as prior knowledge by the coaching team and discussions with captains and coaches. Invites will be sent out for the trial session ready for the 20th/21st of February.

Stage 2 - Trials and tournaments - players are to be assessed over various dates where applicable. Invites will be sent out to join a training squad with the first session likely to take place at the end of March or early April.

Stage 3 - The training squad will work together until a final cut is made and the final squads are selected by the coaching team

The application form can be found below. Please fill in the form and email back to james.hall@ukultimate.com by the 12th of February (the earlier the better please). We will aim to inform everybody either way by the 15th of February ready for trails on the 20th/21st February so please keep that weekend free.

If anyone has any further questions then please feel free to drop me an email or alternatively I will be at mix and mingle in Sheffield this weekend (speak to Si East the TD and he'll be able to point you in my direction).

Looking forward to hearing from you.

GB U20

To be classified as an U20 you must have been born on 1991 or later.

Congratulations to the 2009 U20 squads for a hard fought European championships this summer in Vienna. 3rd place for GB1 Girls, 5th place for GB1 Open and some fantastic results for the second teams have given us great foundations for 2010.

For further information about Junior Ultimate in the U.K., please subscribe to:
juniorultimate@yahoogroups.com.

Open Selection

The U20 Open squad will NOT be holding open tryouts this season.
Players invited to the trainings are:
  • U20s from 2009 (firsts and seconds)
  • U17s from the gold medal winning team at Europeans*
  • Players invited at coaches discretion
*This is still only available to select U17s from that team. The team contained a lot of very young players who are not ready for the U20s. We will be in touch.
The first training will be on the 12/13th December. The training will be from 12:00 till 16:00, accomodation will be provided as per usual. The Sunday will feature a mixed hat tournament with the GB Junior Women as the season is very young!
If you have been invited to training please email Nick and Dale to confirm your place: gbjropen@gmail.com
The trainings will run exactly like last year including costs - each player needs to bring £15 for the session, and provide consent forms if you are under 18. A media release form will be needed as well at this first session. Players without both will be ineligible to play at training.
Any questions, e-mail the coach Nick and Dale: gbjropen@gmail.com

Girls Selection

There will be three open trial weekends which are open to players of all ability levels:
  1. December 12th and 13th
  2. January 16th and 17th
  3. February 20th and 21st
Players are encouraged to make all three trial sessions. If you cannot make one of the sessions, email Linz (team manager) to let her know.

After the last session in February, an initial selection will be made. At the end of March we will announce the final squad. The final squad will continue to train together and play at Tour in the run up to WJUC.

Selection criteria will include:

  • Determination to improve in skill level over the course of the year
  • A commitment to the team shown by effort during drills / game play
  • Willingness to undertake the team fitness programme outside of training
  • Ability to learn and use of tactics
  • Ideally, the ability to play Tour events as part of the GBJW squad.

We are also looking for some more experienced players to step up to the role of captaining the GBJW squad. Consideration will be given to girls who are good role models for more inexperienced players in terms of effort made on pitch, dedication to fitness and training sessions, and demonstrating the 'Spirit of the Game'. Captains must also be willing to prioritise playing for GB at Tours 1 and 2, prior to WJUC.

Accommodation will be provided on Saturday night in local church halls for all that need it.

Please email the U20 Team Manager to confirm your interest:

Linz Wilkinson: linzibo@googlemail.com

If you have any questions about the selection process, or would like more information on the U20 girls team then please email Linz at the address above.

NOTE:

U17 players are also encouraged to attend. At the World Championships, any player selected for the U20's who is eligible to play for the U17's will be allowed to play BIG games for the U17's at the agreement of the coaches and players.

Organisation

UK Ultimate is responsible for selecting the leaders of the GB squads and reviewing their progress and results. Once appointed - the GB managers/captains are largely free to run their squads in the way they believe will deliver the best end results.

The cycle of competitions is such that the main "full" squads are not active during 2010.

There is a full GB Junior programme in place with teams competing at the WFDF World Junior Ultimate Championships and the European "Open" Under-17 Ultimate Championships 2010.

WFDF have also recently announced a World Championships in a new Under-23 division.  The first event will take place in Florence, Italy in the week leading up to 25th July 2010.
