National Teams

The teams that represent the UK at ultimate are coordinated by UK Ultimate. These teams continue to play under the name "Great Britain Ultimate" (GB).

GB players continue to meet virtually all of the costs associated with playing for their country. The staff and volunteers supporting the Junior squads normally receive a limited amount of direct funding from UK Ultimate.

We are delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Lookfly again this year - and that they will be sponsoring GB Ultimate and providing our team uniforms from 2010-2012.

There are GB teams in all of the divisions that currently exist in international ultimate. The senior divisions are: Women, Open, Mixed, Masters; and the Junior divisions are: Women (U20, U17) and Open (U20, U17).  As of 2010 WFDF announced the creation of a new Under-23 tournament with teams in Open, Women and Mixed divisions.  The first World Championships in these divisions took place during July 2010 in Florence, Italy.

GB Open

GB Open is holding the first of two tryouts towards selection of its 2011-2012 squad on the weekend of 09-10 October 2010.

Recognizing that, more so that in any of the previous selection years, there is now a huge pool of talented players across the whole of GB, these tryouts will be walk-in and we encourage players from any club to come and match themselves up against the best.  Juniors and under 23s (over 18s only) are encouraged to come to the trials.

Selection will be based on skill and athleticism, as well as in-play vision and timing.  On day one, players will be put through a series of specific drills which will allow selectors to grade them according to their skill and/or potential.  On day two, a considerable time will be spent on providing players with some basic marking, throwing and cutting drills in an effort to lift the skill base of the squad during the off season.  An initial cut will be made after the first trials and players will be personally invited to the second tryout weekend (date tbc - but probably 30-31 Oct).

We do need to know who is coming in advance.  Please fill in the informal application form and then email it to gb[dot]open[at]ukultimate[dot]com - so we know who you are.

GB Women

GB Women's Trials

The Committee:
Jenna Thomson - Captain
Sophie Watson - Vice Captain
Jools Murray
Gemma Taylor

We invite you to attend the first of 3 GB women's trials on the 9th and 10th of October 2010. We believe that there is an exciting group of talented women in the UK and we would like to see as many of you as we can to achieve our aim of creating a motivated team that is capable of medalling at Worlds in 2012.

We believe that the success or our team lies in unifying the strengths and experience of individuals to create a team that will train, play and develop together on a two year journey to Worlds 2012.

What we are looking for are women who:

- Want to play for the GB Women
- Want to improve
- Value the contribution they can offer to the team
- Have the confidence to attend our trial dates

We encourage women of all levels of experience to try out. (All attendees must be over 18 unless having received a personal invitation prior to trials.)

Please download and complete the application form and email it to ultimate[dot]women[at]gmx[dot]com.

We will be on hand before, during and after trials for any questions or feedback you may wish.

You are expected to make all three trial dates (dates TBC soon).

If you cannot make all 3 please contact the group using the email below with an explanation why.

After the 3 initial trials we will pick a squad of promising players. These promising players will then be given feedback/homework to do over the off season to prepare our bodies and skills for the exciting season ahead.

A retrial will be held in January (date TBC) where we will pick the GB squad that will train throughout the spring.

The final team selection will be made towards the end of Spring, with a focus on preparing for Europeans 2011.

It is important that you all feel confident approaching trials so please do not hesitate to contact the group with questions or concerns.

GB Masters

GB Masters 2011-12 will be led by Stu Mitchell, Ben Mitchell & Si Hill.

Latest info:

We're going to start with two trials.  We'd like people to attend both as far as possible.  Depending on numbers we MAY do some selection prior to and after the first trial.

Dates: 26-27 Feb and 2-3 April.  Locations TBD but expect somewhere between Coventry and Leeds...
Times will be approx:
Sat: 1pm-5pm, followed by a short(ish) meeting approx 6pm-7pm.
Sun: 9am-1pm

The trials are completely open to anyone that is eligible to play GB and meets the age criteria.  The eligibility rules from WUC 2008 can be seen here
http://www.wfdf.org/rules/NTPER_WFDF_Ultimate_Worlds_Events_2007-12-17.pdf
 - its pretty unlikely there will be substantial changes.

To be eligible for EUC 2011 your date of birth must be in 1978 or earlier.
To be eligible for Worlds 2012 your date of birth must be in 1979 or earlier.  We want to hear from you too, and you are welcome to get involved straight away during 2011.

We will have more info about additional dates, etc, at the Feb session.  I know some people are worrying about which tournaments we might do.  *IF* we enter a European tournament in 2011, we will aim for Windmill Windup - but we may look for other ways to get some match practice in June/July.

We expect to create an extremely competitive team...  If you aren't quite sure about committing right now - please put yourself forwards to come to one or both of the trials and find out how we see things shaping up.

To put yourself forwards for selection please email gbmasters@ukultimate.com (or email Si directly at his blueyonder address if you have it) with the following info:
1. Name
2. DoB
3. Which year(s) you want (or are able) to play
4. Some playing background: current/past teams - that sort of thing.
5. What player "class" you are if don't have a UK passport (see WFDF eligibility link for details)
6. If you cannot come to one or both trials please say so.

There are some great Masters players out there who might only hear about this through word-of-mouth.  If you know of anyone that might be interested please feel free to forward this message to them - we will certainly consider strong players that might otherwise not be playing.

GB Strength and Conditioning Coach: J Murray - FITNESSGB@Gmail.com

If you experience any severe pain whilst exercising, stop immediately and contact the GB fitness coach.

Remember: Always make sure you are in a safe environment when exercising. Make sure no obstacles are within your working area and be sure to stay in well lit areas if working outside. Exercising in a group is safer, fun and good for motivation!

Stretching Routine

This is a basic guideline for stretching. Feel free to add your own stretches.

This routine should be done at the END OF EVERY fitness session.

You may feel like stretching isn't necessary, but it is key to INJURY PREVENTION.

Click here for a little more information about the process (closing date 12th Dec).

Organisation

UK Ultimate is responsible for selecting and supporting the leaders of the GB squads and reviewing their progress and results.

GB Ultimate - Senior Squads (Open, Women, Mixed, Masters, Beach)

Once appointed - the GB managers/captains of the senior squads (including the Beach squads) are largely free to run their squads in the way they believe will deliver the best end results.  As of 2011, we are doing more to bring all the squads together whenever doing so is beneficial to the squads.

Update 21 Nov 2010: The application process for GB Masters and the six WCBU GB Ultimate Beach squads is now open.  Click here for more details and to access the application forms.

The GB Junior Programme coordinates across four youth divisions: Junior Open & Women, U17 Boys and Girls.  The programme is led by the GBJ Supervisory Committee, and in particular by the GBJ Programme Manager.  The team coaching and management roles are shown below.  Basically the coaches are responsible for the Ultimate, and the managers are responsible for the broader "well-being" of the players.  Each of the four squads has a Team Coach and a Team Manager.  Generally we try to make sure there are some Assistant Coaches involved with each squad aswell.

Update 18 Nov 2010: We are now accepting applications for team coach and team management roles in the GB Junior programme for 2011-12.  Click here for more details.  Click here to download an application form.

The GB U23 Programme that ran for the first time during 2010 will definitely be back...  However - for time-being we are waiting for an international decision regarding the frequency of U23 events.  There are no plans to have U23 teams at the European Championships in 2011.  There has not yet been a decision as to whether there will be U23 divisions during 2012 (but we hope this will happen).
