Club Ultimate

This section of the website contains information about ultimate clubs and competitions within the UK, across all divisions.

The teams section allows you to manage and/or search for and join teams.

There is an area set aside for each of the main divisions: Open, Women's and Mixed where you can find information about those divisions and in particular the latest results.

Additionally there is a further area of the website dedicated to University and Juniors ultimate respectively. This is where you can find information about the divisions that are specific to those groups - such as eligibility rules for University ultimate

We are working on providing more information about Indoor Ultimate and will have more in place before the 2010-11 season.

For rules governing UKU Tour, Nationals and EUCS please see the:

UKU Competition Rules 2010

This includes information about

There are additional eligibility requirements placed on the clubs that are attending WUCC 2010.  These are documented here:

UKU Competition Structure

The UKU competition structure varies a little depending on the division.  All of our divisions hold a UKU National Championships.  Additionally, the outdoor season in the Open, Women and Mixed divisions also have the UKU Tour; and in the Open and Women divisions there is also the annual European Ultimate Championship Series.

In 2009 we have been reviewing the objectives of these various competitions to help guide decision-making when it becomes necessary to make changes to how the competitions work.

We have started this process with the Open and Women divisions, although some aspects also apply to Mixed.

The following statements attempt to describe the high level goals of each competition:

UKU National Championships (All divisions)

UKU Tour (Outdoor Open, Women, Mixed only)

European Ultimate Championship Series (Outdoor Open and Women only)

(*1) This has not been the case for a number of years in Open, Women and Mixed divisions, but is a requirement that will be met by the 2010 structure for Open and Women.  It will not necessarily be delivered by the structure in the Mixed division for 2010.

Competition Structure 2010

Outdoor Season 2010

Senior Divisions

We will continue to run a "split season": i.e. the Mixed Tour & Nationals will be held during the Spring, with Open/Women season running over the summer.  (For specifics on dates, please refer to the events calendar.)

Open/Women divisions will in 2010 see Nationals split away from the Tour.

In the Open division we plan to introduce Regional championships as a qualification round for teams wanting to play at Nationals (*1).

In the Women division all teams will be able to enter directly to National Finals.

In 2010, the number of regions may be subject to the number of teams entering and is still to be finalised (as of Sept 2009), but the medium term plan is to establish a number of fixed geographical regions and for the Regional championships to build up their own identity.

UK-Nationals will act as a qualification round (the so-called EUCQ) for the European Ultimate Championship Series.  If that competition retains its current structure then UK-Nationals will be a qualification tournament for the West-Region qualifier (EUCR-W).  UKU has appealed to the European Championship Series Committee to review the structure of these regional competitions for 2010 following the results of the EUCR-W 2009.

Teams will NOT be required to retain the same roster from the UKU Tour into UK-Regionals and Nationals.  It is intended that the Tour tournaments will maintain a relatively strict set of roster rules, but only for the purposes of that competition.  Teams will be free to make unlimited roster changes prior to the start of UK-Regionals as that competition will be governed by the roster rules from the European Series.

(*1) In 2010 it is intended that a number of the top teams from The Tour will be offered the chance to skip UK-Regionals provided they only make very limited changes to their roster (precise details will be published soon).

The UKU Mixed season will, as in 2009, consist of three Tour events where the UKU Nationals will be used as "Tour 3".  This means that qualification and seeding at Nationals will be taken from the results of Tour 1 and Tour 2.

University Divisions will continue to have the same structure as 2009.

Outdoor National Championships will be held in Open, Women and Mixed divisions.  There are Regional qualifiers in Open and Mixed divisions.  Open division is part of the BUCS championships, and National Finals will (as in 2009) be co-located with the National BUCS Championships in Sheffield.

Junior Divisions will hold U19 and U17 Outdoor Nationals in Open and Women divisions.  There are no plans to introduce regional qualifiers at this time as it is expeceted that there is enough space for all the teams that want to enter.

Indoor Season 2010

The indoor season is planned to run with the same structure as 2009 across all divisions.  It is worth noting that Club Indoor Nationals has a qualification round, but that those qualifiers are not tied to any geographic region.  There are no current plans to change this.

Beach Ultimate 2010

UK Ultimate intends to introduce a formal National Beach ultimate championships during 2010.  Initial plans are that we will identify a number of existing tournaments as qualifiers - in agreement with the organisers of course - with National Finals being run towards the end of the Summer.

Outdoor Season 2010 Provisional Dates for Tour and Nationals

The dates shown below are the intended dates for UKU Mixed, Open and Women tournaments in 2010.

There is also a PDF provisional calendar below that contains many other tournaments as well as the UKU events (thanks Felix).

Please be aware that it is not possible to guarantee that we will receive bids for the dates outlined below.  We will be favouring bids for these dates of course.

UKU Mixed Tour:
MT1 = 26-27 MARCH (*1)
MT2 = 17-18 APRIL
MT-NATS (MT3) = 15-16 MAY

UKU Open/Women Tour:
OWT1 = 29-30 MAY (*2)
OWT2 = 19-20 JUNE
OWT3 = 17-18 JULY (*1)

UKU National Championships
UK-Regionals = 31 JULY/1 AUG(*3)
UK-Nationals = 21/22 AUG

European Ultimate Championship Series
EUCR-W (Assume that this is likely to be 4/5 SEPT)
Expect EUCF to be end of Sept / beginning October (no bids received as yet)

Also note:
World Ultimate Club Championships is 3-10 JULY in Prague, Czech Rep.
World Junior Ultimate Championships is 3-7 AUGUST in Heilbron, Germany

(*1) These dates are certainly not ideal when seen in isolation.  The Competition Committee they were the better than the alternatives when considering the bigger picture of the whole calendar.

(*2) As of 11 Sept, there is an outstanding question about whether to plan OWT1 as a 3-day event and make use of the bank holiday.  Decision to be finalised asap.

(*3) Competition Committee still needs to announce how many regions will be used in 2010.  For now bidders should assume there will be four: North, Midlands, South-West, South-East but this is still subject to change.

You must register your team in order to enter UKU events.

Finding a team is simpler than ever!

Open Division

The Open Division is just that: i.e. "open to all players".

The Open Division sees two titles awarded annually: a Tour championship, analogous to a league title, and the National championship, a knockout event run over the course of a weekend. The Tour structure was developed in 1997 as a series of events throughout the country that would allow teams to find their position within the playing population and, by using different tournament formats throughout the season, increase the percentage of games played against similar standard opponents. With points awarded to each position partially based on the number of teams in attendance, the Tour structure has been partly responsible for the increase in standard of the UK game, and has received praise from several of our European neigbours.

As well as showcasing the highest level of ultimate played in the country, the Open division caters for upcoming and newly formed teams, with a two-tier system of competition that promotes competition at greater depth, and allows teams to acclimatise as they learn.

In 2008 Chevron Action Flash won the UKU Tour in the Open division for the first time.

Women's Division

While there have been women’s club teams in the UK for over fifteen years, before 2004 these teams did not have their own division outside of the annual Nationals event and international play. Instead, competitive women’s teams played in the Open Tour or individual women played on Mixed teams within the Mixed and Open divisions. However, in 2004 it was decided there were sufficient numbers and enthusiasm to run a full Women’s Tour alongside the Open Tour. Since the advent of the Women’s Tour, the women’s division in the UK has increased in size in each successive year and the UK now boasts the biggest women’s division in Europe.

Although the Women’s Tour is smaller than the Open Tour, it remains very competitive. The strength of the Women’s Tour has even caught the eye of a number of European women’s teams, many of whom travel to the UK to compete in our domestic competitions.

This year, after losing last season’s Tour title to local rivals Bliss by the slimmest of margins, Iceni 1 won two of three Tour events to clinch the 2006 Women’s Tour title.

Women's Committee

The current women's committee is:

Sally Cannon, Alize Clough, Tina Collier, Natalie Kruse, Aura Mackenzie, Felix Shardlow, Gemma Taylor, Cat Vaughn

The Role of The Women's Committee (non-exhaustive):

a. To be the communication group between Women in the UK and the UKUA Board. If there are any concerns, such as with the Tour format, or anything at all, these should be directed to the WC - who will then either be able to deal with the matter themselves, or refer it to the UKUA Board. The WC will be responsible for promoting the standard of Women's tournaments within the UK.

b. To focus on recruiting more women's teams for the Women's Tour.

c. To focus on supporting women's teams throughout the UK to recruit women.

d. Encouraging contacts between established women's clubs and universities. Coordinating, or requesting information from clubs that do have such contacts, so that other areas of the country may benefit from the knowledge of how best to make this development aim work.

e. To encourage skills days, with the aim of making sure that they happen, and encouraging established teams to run skills days within their region.

f. To encourage All-Stars events to fit the needs of the Women's UK Ultimate Community. The WC will not be responsible for organizing the actual events, this will be the role of teams / other members of the Women's UK Ultimate Community.

g. To encourage other non-tour events, eg. hat tournaments - helping to identify where such events may be of use to teams, and suggesting that they happen.

h. Responsibility to ensure that these days are advertised effectively to all teams throughout the UK.

i. To co-ordinate with the NPAC to encourage women's teams to run alongside established men's teams.

j. To think about introducing the intern program into the WC.

k. To co-ordinate and encourage what is happening in different regions - so that the development of UK women is known - and if one region is e.g. found to be lacking in 'development events', attention can be focused there. In addition, this will help to build a central knowledge of women's development initiatives.

l. To liaise with other European teams and facilitate the European Club Series when it takes off. Getting foreign teams to the UK for tournaments and advertising foreign tournaments for teams/players to go to (or ensuring the UKUA does).

m. Reviewing the Women's Tour rules yearly and updating as appropriate.

n. Coordinating with the DoC for Women's Tour schedules.

o. Keeping the Women's section of the UKUA website updated and useful for members.

p. Working out ways of developing the Women's game in the UK. That may involve requesting feedback from Women in the UK.

q. Responsibility for ensuring those plans are implemented and developed.

Mixed Division

In Mixed Ultimate each point is played with both teams having the same number of female and same number of male players. Usually the team starting the point on offense decides how many female players will play that point. The other team then sets their team up for that point with the same number of female players.

School's Pack

The following resources are available to help you get a team started at your school:

Starter Pack (by Phil Richardson)

The starter pack contains plenty of information to help anyone wishing to set up a Junior team - covering everything from 'health and safety' and how to obtain funding, to training ideas.

Introduction to Ultimate

An introduction to Ultimate Frisbee - explaining how the game is played and providing examples of drills suitable for school-aged children.

Lesson Plans (by Matt Smith)

These are currently being updated.  Please contact admin(at)ukultimate(dot)com for further information or to obtain copies of the lesson plans.

Frisbee Death (was Frisbee Tag)

Everyone plays inside a marked area about the size of an endzone. One disc is used, and the aim is to throw the disc at anyone to hit them (head shots are discouraged). Usual Ultimate rules apply in that the person with the disc cannot move, everyone else can run away or get as close as they dare. If the disc hits anyone before it hits the ground, that person is 'out' and is a prisoner of the thrower. They remain outside the marked area until the person who caught them is out of the game. People can also be out by having their throw caught (before it hits the ground). If only two people are left inside the area (I.e. everyone else is a prisoner of one of them) then everyone comes back in to the game (we don't like outright winners)

The result is a game that is instant for kids to understand, very fast moving, initially rewards poor throwers (whose throws tend to go in to the ground, or are quite uncatchable), rapidly improves people's catching skills, and throws up some surprising team work. We normally have to introduce a couple of extra rules like you cannot throw it twice in a row unless you get someone out with a shot, dangerous play (thrown too fast at someone very close) results in losing your prisoners and dropping out until someone else is caught out, must hit people above knee to discourage aiming too low, etc.

University Divisions

Ultimate is a strong, well represented sport at university level with over 80 HE institutions taking part each year in a programme that offers competition in the disciplines of Mixed, Women's & Open and caters for beginners & experienced players alike. A typical season will see some 20 tournaments organised, both indoor & out, on a regional & national basis.

For news, announcements and discussions of the university division please see the Uniultimate e-group .

Universities play a very important role in the development of the Ultimate and each year hundreds of new students get hooked on this fantastic sport. Indeed many of the top players on the UK circuit had to wait until arriving at university to get their first taste of the game.

Ultimate is an official sport of the British Colllege and Universities Sports (BUCS), with both open indoor and outdoor nationals worth BUCS points to the eight highest ranking institutions. University regions are as follows:

For more information about BUCS, please see their Website.

If you would like to contact someone regarding university ultimate please see the university coordinators committee page to see who to get in touch with.

7. Unintentional Breach of Eligibility
Following an unintentional breach of eligibility, any of the following may apply, at the discretion of the Committee:

The following define what movement of players between teams within the same club during a Series is acceptable:

9.1. In each event, clubs entering more than one team shall declare which team is the first, which is the second, and so on, so as to facilitate the following rule;
9.2. Players may only play for one team at each stage of the Series, e.g. a player may not compete on the first team at Nationals Division 1, and on the second team at Nationals Division 2.

10. Breach of Movement Terms
A breach of the movement terms defined in section 9 above shall be classed as an intentional breach of eligibility and shall be dealt with using the terms defined in section 8 above.

11. Additional Queries

The University Year

For upcoming University Events see here

The location of open national events follows the regional rotation system.

Regional Rotation System

The concept of a rotation system for UU national competitions was born at the UU AGM in 2003 and seeked to solve the location problems that, under the previous method of allocation, could see a player spending the entirety of their University Ultimate career having to travel the length of the country to play Nationals. It was also acknowledged that knowing which region were to host Nationals would allow teams to adequately prepare for the event.

It was decided to split the UK into 3 regions - Scotland, The North & Midlands and The South - and to implement a 4-year rotation system for the Indoor & Outdoor Open Championships with a weighting of 2:1:1 in favour of the larger North/Midlands region.

Open Indoor and Outdoor Nationals will be in specifically paired regions that change each year so that travel times are roughly equal for all teams across the 4 year rotation. Twice in the four years, the North & Midlands will hold Outdoor Nationals, and during these years, Indoor Nationals will be in both Scotland and The South exactly once. When Outdoor Nationals is in Scotland or the South, Indoor Nationals will be in the North & Midlands.

The relative youth of the Women's and Mixed competitions meant that they were not included in the rotation system and so the University Committee seek to hold these as centrally as possible.

The 2003/2004 season was the first season in which a rotation system for Division 1 Nationals was implemented and subsequently corresponds to 'year 1' above.

In 2005 it was further decided that Division 2 Nationals (previously NTN) would follow the system on a one year down basis.

UKU University Coordinator (in the chair)

The UKU University Coordinator is a full member of the UKUA Board.

The University Coordinator should be the main point of contact for new University or College teams and for related official enquires.

The Coordinator should act as the chair for the UKU University Committee, leading discussion and ensuring its productivity. The Coordinator should support the Regional Coordinators in their duties.

Through liaison with the UKU Director of Competitions, attempts should be made to schedule the major UKU University tournaments around the other major UKU tournaments to enable the more talented University players to compete in more than one division.

The University Coordinator will be responsible for agreeing format and scheduling of UKU University tournaments, as well as ensuring a standardised process of tournament bidding and dealing with any irregularities that arise.

The University Coordinator is responsible for making seeding decisions at the major University events (this should be merely a matter of applying the accepted algorithm).

The University Coordinator should ensure that the resources available to university teams {risk assessments, code of conducts, applications for funding, etc} are kept up to date and are well publicised.

Nearing the end of their tenure, the Coordinator is responsible for advertising the AGM and chairing it or arranging for a replacement Chair.

The Coordinator is appointed by a majority vote at the University Ultimate AGM.

The current University Coodinator is Edd Carmichael.

Mixed Coordinator

This is currently held as a non-voting, advisory position.

Survival

So, what should you expect if you've just joined your university club? Definitely a few good nights out and a few heavy mornings in the first few weeks of term. Each club has their favourites from pub crawls and pub golf to the three pint challenge, the traditional ultimate drinking game. Most clubs organise socials throughout the year so if you want to join a club for the drinking you couldn't do any better than Ultimate!

Pretty soon you'll be lucky enough to attend a tournament. In all likelihood, this will be an indoors Beginners event sometime October/November [though there are occasionally Beginners events in January]. Once you start attending tournaments you'll experience the best part of the Ultimate Social Side. Each tournament has a party on Saturday night, after having played Ultimate all Day, where everyone lets off a bit of steam! If it's your first tournament you'll notice the standard of Ultimate drop slightly on Sunday morning. You might think this strange but it's pretty much the same at every tournament the world over...

Unless it happens to be near your home town and your club has a record of avoiding socials [a shameful state of affairs that should be avoided], you'll be spending the whole weekend away, and probably kipping on someone's floor. To that end, there's a list of things you could forget.

If you have any specific questions feel free to contact anyone on the university Committee.

 I'm a part time/postdoc student, can I play?

If your institutions registrar has you down as being a part time (60 credits/year) or full time (120 credits/year) student then yes you may compete. For cases that do not involve a credit based system, part time is defined as at least 50% of the full time course hours.

You may only compete with one institution per academic year. Provided that the visiting institution's registrar classifies you as a student and you have not competed for your original institution this academic year then yes, you may compete with your visiting institution.

I'm graduating this year, can I play?

Masters or PhD students who graduate part way through the academic year may play for the remainder of the academic year after they have graduated.

No, only those undertaking a higher or further education programme of study may compete.
