Coaching Scheme

Introduction

The UKU Coaching Awards Program was launched in August 2005 when the first Level 1 course became available. In 2007 we introduced the Leader Award - aimed at non ultimate players.  Creating a network of coaches, and a general culture of coaching across Ultimate in the UK will help to:

Coaching Scheme Structure

Overview

In line with other sports our Coaching Scheme is organised in a number of levels.  Over time we will be reviewing and adjusting the content of the various levels in the scheme so that they are in line with other sports and the UK Coaching Framework in general.

We also recognise that for a sport like Ultimate - where increasingly individuals first come across the sport as a teacher or coach - there is a need to provide an introductory level coaching award.

Leader Award

(Parts 1 & 2)

  • Two independent 3-hour workshops
  • Part 2 requires Part 1 and/or ~6 months experience
  • Aimed at teachers/coaches that are new to Ultimate

This is the most basic qualification covering instruction of the basic skills of the game, the rules, and the Spirit of the game (SOTG). It is aimed at teachers, youth leaders, sports-coaches, or anyone else who wants to lead a group of beginners through meaningful practice sessions.

It is assumed that participants have little or no experience of Ultimate and the course content reflects this. The workshop is very practical, and includes time on looking and practicing basic skills in addition to discussing introducing those skills to other people.

Level 1
  • 1-day course - mostly classroom based
  • Includes basic coaching concepts in addition to ultimate-specific content
  • Min 1 year experience of Ultimate

This course gives outline knowledge of Ultimate, basic techniques, a basic tactical awareness of how the game works and strategies for both offence and defence, along with an introduction to coaching techniques.

The course assumes a reasonable degree of experience of the sport, and was originally written with the aim of supporting the transition to coaching for existing Ultimate players.

Level 2
  • 32 credits from combination of mandatory and optional courses
  • Includes both Ultimate-specific and general content
  • Level 1 is pre-requisite

The Level 2 includes a mixture of mandatory and optional courses worth a varying number of credits.

The Ultimate-specific component builds on an extends the content from Level 1.  Additionally there are some optional ultimate-specific modules in the areas of fitness training and skill acquisition, in addition to some generic coaching modules that are offered by sportscoachUK.

The intention is that this is the level of award that will be appropriate for coaches with aspirations beyond simply organising training sessions for their local team.

Leader Award

The Leader Award is aimed towards teachers and youth leaders with some experience of coaching or leading sporting activities, but with little or no experience of ultimate.
If you are planning to introduce ultimate in your school/area, or would like to know enough about the game to just consider whether to do so, then this course is for you!
The course has been kept deliberately simple and is entirely contained within the three hour session.   It is intended to give you enough information to get started.

Please see the Information Sheet for further details.

Level 1

Becoming a recognised Level 1 UKUA Ultimate coach is both a rewarding and valuable experience. This course develops the information, techniques and strategies that you can then pass on, explain and justify, to team-mates and other players with confidence. The material covered will improve your understanding of both coaching and playing Ultimate.

Is the Level 1 Coaching Award for you?

Whilst we would not wish to discourage anyone who is keen to learn the basics of coaching Ultimate, the following list will give you an indication of the background necessary to gain the most from the course:

You should have:

  • been playing Ultimate regularly for at least 18 months
  • competed at several national-level outdoor tournaments
  • organised and run at least one team training session
  • experience of teaching beginners to throw backhands and sidearms
  • have a good practical understanding of the rules of the game.

If all - or at least most - of the above applies to you, then the material in the Level 1 Coach award has been designed with you in mind!

For more details see UKUA Level 1 Coach Award Information Sheet

Level 2

The Level 2 includes a mixture of mandatory and optional courses worth a varying number of credits.

The intention is that this is the level of award that will be appropriate for coaches with aspirations beyond simply organising training sessions for their local team.

Join the UKU Coaching Register

Introduction

We are still in the initial stages of creating the Coaching Register, so the application process will be relatively manual for a while.

Remember that for the time being the Coaching Register is aimed at individuals who have done the Level 1 award, and are involved in coaching Ultimate outside their immediate club.  If you are in any doubt about whether you should register please contact us to discuss your situation.

Coaches working within/for a coaching organisation (e.g. a limited company) must still register with the scheme, but that organisation will need its own liability insurance arrangements.  A representative of that organisation may register all of their coaches together if that helps.

To Register

Please send an email to admin@ukultimate.com with the following information:

Subject line: UKU Coaching Register - <Your Name>

Message body:

Name: <First Name> <Last Name>

Membership details: <Your UKU user account name or membership number>

Level 1 Course attended: <Approx date, location>

Additional courses/modules taken:

First Aid - ideally with reference number or scan of certificate if possible

Details of any sportscoachUK courses from our list of Level 2 modules

Assuming everything is correct you will then receive an invoice.  Confirmation of registration will be confirmed when payment received.

The price is expected to be approx £70.

Coach Educators

The Coach Educators who run the level 1 course are all international level players and have a wealth of experience coaching Ultimate to players of many different levels.

We would like to have a few more coach educators involved in the team so that we can provide more courses.  If you are interested, please email admin@ukultimate.com for more information.

Funding

A very limited number of funded places are available coaching courses each year.  These are available to individuals who can demonstrate that the course fees represent a difficult expense and that their attendance on the course will benefit the UK Ultimate community significantly.

If you are interested please contact admin@ukultimate.com explaining why you believe you meet these criteria along with references and any other supporting information.

If you have any queries about the Scheme in general, please contact admin@ukultimate.com

Future Plans

For the time being our priorities are:

Beyond that the next steps are likely to include
