1. Announcing new UKU Schools National Championship Series

2012 will see the launch of a new UKU Schools Nationals competition.  More schools are taking up the sport, and the goal of setting up this event is to encourage competitive participation from schools that do not currently enter Ultimate events.  We will be providing a mechanism by which groups of schools or individuals can set up a local schools event to be part of the Series - with winners progressing to the next round (presumably a National final in the early years - but maybe a county event in the future!).

To make the process easier for schools, the competition will be 5-a-side, with short games (~20 mins) played on smaller pitches.  There will be no differentiation between indoors and outdoors - although the Finals will be played outdoors - probably in June.

More detailed information will be released soon - please watch this space!

2. Matalan Sporting Promise update

The Matalan Sporting Promise is an exciting project that is giving us the opportunity to take ultimate to hundreds of secondary schools in the next 2 years.   There is more information here.  We hope to start connecting new players with their nearby clubs - so please consider updating the information on your "club page" on the website as that is the first place they will look.

3. Board Elections and AGM reminder

The UK Ultimate AGM will take place in Cardiff on Sat 24th March (location and exact time TBD).  Following feedback from last year's meeting we decided to revert to using the Saturday evening of one of our major events.

Two positions on the Board are also up for re-election following a structure of rotating elections that we have now put in place: Director for Junior Ultimate, and one of the without-portfolio positions.

So Kev Lowe and Barry O'Kane are both standing down, although Barry will be re-standing.

Kev (after millions of years of tireless effort developing Junior Ultimate) is hoping we can find a replacement.  Kev is offering to continue to invest the usual time on this role throughout 2012 in order to support/train any incoming volunteer.

If you are interested in standing for either role please:

The closing date for applications is midnight on 29th Feb.

The election itself will start electronically in March, and will be concluded at the AGM where members may vote in person if they did not vote electronically.

If you are interested in getting involved but would like to discuss what is involved, please feel free to get in touch with Si Hill (or another board member) who will be happy to provide more details.

4. World Championships 2012

The website for WFDF World Ultimate and Guts Championships 2012 went live earlier this month: http://wugc2012.org/

For the first time there will be a Women's Masters division - and Great Britain expects to send a team to the tournament.  The team is getting organised now, and there are trials later in February.  For more information contact Nicole maaafy_bird@yahoo.co.uk.

Quick reminder that World Junior Ultimate Championships, and the European Youth Ultimate Championships will take place in Dublin, Ireland, starting the week of Sunday 12th August 2012.  More details will be released soon.

5. UKU Competitions: Nationals Consultation, OWT3 & Alumni Cup

You should be aware that the majority of UKU events for 2012 have been fixed and announced.  We are still waiting to finalise a venue for OWT3 as Cardiff is unavailable due to the Olympics.  There are one or two people working on possible venues, but nothing has been finalised yet.  If you are interested please get in touch.

Women's & Mixed Nationals: thanks to all those people that have responded to the consultation on Mixed & Women's Nationals.  We are reviewing the responses now and will publish a final decision for 2012 by end Feb at the latest.  It is abundantly clear that there is no single solution that will please everyone.

UKU Alumni Cup: the inaugral UKU Alumni Cup will be held in Manchester alongside the Open and Women's University Outdoor Nationals.  For more details, and in particular information on how to enter, please check the event page on the website.

6. Other Reminders

Membership Changes: As of October 1st 2011 a fixed expiry date of 30th Sept for all UKU memberships will come in to effect.  All membership details in terms of types of membership and prices are unchanged.  Please see the website for further details.

Coach Registration Scheme: The coach registration scheme has been created to support coaches who are involved in coaching Ultimate beyond an informal player-coach role within their local club.  The scheme helps with coaching insurance, and provides a mechanism for those who wish to coach children and young people with a safeguarding policy and a procedure for attaining a CRB check with UK Ultimate.

Please see the website for more details about the UKU Coaching Scheme and UKU Coach Registration.
