1. Events Roundup

Congratulations to UKU U14 Indoor National Champions: Devonport High School for Boys - who won the first Ultimate tournament they ever entered!  Airbadgers (Exeter) won U17 Indoor Nationals at the same event.  Given the number of teams in both divisions we are going to be struggling to host them at the same location next year.

In other indoor events, Evolution won Women's Junior Indoor Nationals; and Dundee University did the double winning both Open and Women's divisions.  Congrats all round.

Club Indoor Nationals takes place this weekend (2-3 Feb); Uni Mixed on 9-10 Feb; Club Mixed on 16-17 Feb and Junior (U20) Indoor Nationals rounding off the season on 2-3 March.  Good luck to all involved.

3. GB Ultimate

GB Ultimate teams will be competing in fifteen divisions over four competitions during 2013!  In chronological order...

Pop quiz: there are two reigning world champions in this lot, but which is defending its title this year?

4. Announcing UKU Spirit of the Game policies

You may know that the UKU formed a Spirit of the Game committee in the last two years (more information here).  Following a great deal of hard work from the group, UKU recently adopted a new set of Spirit of the Game policies that we will use as part of a system to monitor and promote SOTG in the UK.

In the first instance we intend to adopt the policies for the Tour, Regionals and Nationals in the Open, Women's and Mixed divisions.  Depending on the outcome of trialling the system this year we expect to extend the approach to additional competitions and divisions over time.

It should be noted that we have also formally adopted a new Conduct and Complaints policy - which presumably we will never actually need to use (more information here).

5. UKU Club Affiliation now live

UK Ultimate Club Affiliation is now available.

  1. It allows UK Ultimate to have a formal and clear relationship with clubs (as organisations rather than whichever team member happens to email to enter an event).  We need this to improve procedures around entering events, managing rosters, etc, but perhaps most of all in presenting information about clubs to the general public.
  2. It provides us with a framework that clubs and UKU can use together to support clubs that would like to offer Ultimate to young people and/or vulnerable adults; and supporting clubs in adopting structures and governance that will better enable them to apply for funding and grants.
  3. It allows us to extend the UKU's liability insurance to club committees at a really low cost to the clubs.

Please look here for more details.

6. UKU Coaching Scheme

We just announced eight Level 1 coaching workshops taking place around the UK between now and the end of June 2013.  Please see the website for more details.

Level 2 update: we tried out the Level 2 workshop for the first time in November 2012; and will be doing another "test-day" during the first half of 2013.  We will be launching formally in time to run the first proper Level 2 workshops in Autumn 2013.  If you've been quite active in various coaching roles since doing your Level 1 and would like to be in our test-group, please contact Liam Kelly

7. WFDF Rules

WFDF Rules were updated as of 1st Jan 2013.  The details have now been updated on the UKU website

WFDF now has a dedicated rules site with additional resources and a new Accreditation scheme.

All outdoor UKU events are now be played to the new WFDF rules (Jan 2013).  Please note that UKU Indoor Rules will not be updated until the end of the current indoor season.  I.e. the previous indoor rules still stand.

8. Can you help please?

Are you an accountant, or VAT guru, or corporation tax expert...?

We are looking to find one or two volunteers that could help us with specific short-term projects relating to the UKU finances.  If you think you could offer us some help please get in touch (using the contact form or by emailing Si Hill or Wayne Davey directly) - thanks!
