1. It’s been a while…
First, an apology.  It’s been a long time since you last received a member update from UK Ultimate.  2009 has been busier than ever but of course running XEUCF stands out in particular as something that took a huge amount of time and effort.  Hopefully we will be able to keep the member update on track from now on.

You can also follow "UKUltimate" on Twitter for shorter, more frequent snippets.

2. University Open Indoor Champions

Congratulations to Portsmouth Sublime for winning BUCS Indoor Nationals last weekend - and to St Andrews/Flatball and Newcaslte/Too Many Pies for their Spirit of the Game results.

3. Rules News

- We keep the latest copies of the rules on the website.

- Please remember - and we are well into the Indoor Season for 2009-10 - that we adapt the full WFDF rules to produce official indoor rules.

- There is also an official WFDF page dedicated to the rules of ultimate which also includes additional resources such as a rules quiz to help you and your team stay up to date.

- German Ultimate player, Claudius Kirsch has developed an iPhone application which brings the WFDF Rules of Ultimate to your iPhone – ideal if for instance you need a quick look at a certain passage between games.  The app can be downloaded for free on iTunes.

- And finally - we are NOT expecting any further updates to the WFDF Rules of Ultimate in 2010.  There may be some updates and improvements to the Interpretations document.

4. WFDF Spirit of the Game

The WFDF Spirit of the Game Committee recently released the 2010 version of its new Spirit of the Game scoresheets, translated into 25 different languages for worldwide use. The translation of the 2010 Spirit of the Game scoring system in 25 languages is a major milestone for the WFDF. No other document in the organization has ever been translated in so many languages and it shows that the organization is committed to promoting the Spirit and the game of Ultimate worldwide.

"I am extremely pleased with the new Spirit of the Game scoring sheet," said Kevin Givens, Executive Director of the WFDF. "With the continuous growth of Ultimate worldwide, it is imperative that Spirit of the Game education grows as well".

A particularly important change from earlier versions is the reduction of the number of scoring criteria from 8 to 5 is. Each team is now scored on:
1) Rules knowledge and use,
2) Fouls and body contact,
3) Fair‐mindedness,
4) Positive attitude and self‐control,
5) Themselves (did the team play with worse, same, or better Spirit than the other team?)

Each of the criteria are now rated "Excellent", "Very Good", "Good", "Not so Good", or "Poor", and teams awarded 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 points respectively, yielding a score range of 0-20 points per team per game.
UKU is very keen to encourage tournament organisers to use this feedback system at their events - and in particular will be making it a requirement of UKU events in 2010.  Now that players and teams have had time to gain experience of this sort of objective system, we are also now looking at how to make the best use of this new information - starting here...

6. Rostering & Membership reminder

Please remember that anyone intending to play in any UKU events needs to be a current member of the UKU – please check that your own membership, and if you are team captain then also check those of your team mates.  Following upgrades to the website this is much easier than it used to be.

You can see your own membership status in the "My account" area - including the expiration date.  Team captains can also see the membership status for players in their team.

Please get in touch if you think there is a problem with your membership status, or if you experience any problems with updating your membership.

7. Ultimatum! - check your online details

Ultimatum! 2009 is in production and will be mailed out at the end of the year. Please remember that you will not get your copy if your address data is incomplete on your UKU membership profile, or if your membership has lapsed.  The two most common problems are:

- missing house number (perhaps because the website's input box only says "Street?")

- people moving house, but forgetting to update their details
