UKU University Mixed Outdoor Nationals 2017/18

UXON will be held on this date in 2018 at Salford Sports Village!

For another year running, the tournament will be using the format of the Swiss Draw! This will enable us to run the event without the need of any qualifier/regional tournaments and it means that we can fit a large number of teams (hopefully everyone!) at the one venue.




The forecast for this weekend in Salford has got much worse over the last few hours. It seems quite possible that we will not be able finish the tournament - although who knows what the weather will actually do. It certainly seems likely to be unpleasant even if we can play out the competition. We appreciate that many of you will already be on your way, but we have taken the decision to offer a FULL REFUND to any teams that want and decide to drop out now BEFORE MIDNIGHT tonight. We CANNOT cover any travel or accommodation losses.

WATER: We WILL NOT be providing team water bottles. 

 Water will be available from the main building but it’s a bit of a walk away from the pitches so make sure that you bring more than one water bottle and that you fill them up before your game! Especially if you have a back-to-back!!


55 minute games.  Cap of 13 points. Half at 7.
1 timeout per team, per half. 
When time is up, finish the point then reduce points cap to current highest score +1.  
The HARD CAP is when the hooter signalling the start of the next game goes and you are to finish the possession. Draws can occur.

There are no pools, or knockout rounds. As the tournament goes on, you play against teams whose performance is closer and closer to your own. On saturday, teams will be divided into 2 equal groups of 16 (A and B). Each group of 16 will play in alternate game spots i.e. odd seeds will play in gameslots 1, 3 and 5. 

After Saturday the top 16 teams and bottom 16 teams will be reshuffled into new groups to give you further opportunity to play teams of your standard.
Game rounds cannot be generated until all scores are in i.e. Round 3 cannot be generated until the scores of Round 1 are all in. DO NOT WALK AWAY FROM YOUR FIELD UNTIL YOU SCORE HAS BEEN COLLECTED.
Swiss draw takes into account not only the score of your game (down to how many points each team scores) but also how well you and your opposition have done so far. Winning by a margin of 3 will give you a better Swiss Draw score than if you win by 2. Beating a strong team by 3 is better than beating a weak team by 3.

Entry for this tournament will open on Tuesday 23rd January until Thursday 22nd February and will cost £155. Teams are required to enter using the UKU Event Entry Form.

We understand that it's not always easy to get payment sorted through your uni, so you do not need to pay by that date to secure your spot - but if you are signed up as of that date, and are offered a spot, you will be liable for the fees if you subsequently pull out. Don't enter a team just on the off chance you might take up the spot!


However, with such a high number of teams entering, we will not be able to guarantee accommodation for ANY teams. As you can imagine, having around 40 teams at the event with about 12-15 people per team, that's a lot of people to cater for, so we ask that you seriously consider whether you'd be able to attend the tournament if you are required to find your own accommodation for the weekend.

We MAY be able to provide some teams with a place to say for the night, in the form of a scout hut/church hall, but we urge teams to not rely on this possibility. If you have an option to stay in accommodation within 1 hour of the venue, the we strongly suggest that you confirm that as soon as you can rather than waiting on us to say whether something is or isn't available.

In previous years where we've held the tournament at this venue we have had to send teams to scout huts in Liverpool, so we do not exagerate when we say that we are limited with the accommodation options that we can organise for you. Although, if you are seriously stuck and have no other options, for whatever reason, then please state that you REALLY REALLY need accommdation on the UKU Event Entry Form and include details in the 'Other Information' section and we will try our best but, just to reiterate, we cannot guarantee accommodation for any teams at this moment in time.

Also, the other thing to bear in mind is that if any accommodation space is found, the other aspect that will be considered will be distance from the venue. Teams will be allocated space dependent on how far away their University is from the venue/how long their journey is in conjunction with whether they've stated they're depserate for a place to stay. Therefore, if your University is within 2-3 hours of the venue then please do not get your hopes up that accommodation space will be offered to you.


But what if the tournament is oversubscribed?

We hope to accommodate everyone at this tournament, but should the tournament be oversubscribed at the closing date, the following rules (using the UKU/BUCS indoor rules as a basis) will apply:


UKU/BUCS Entry Rules

BUCS Regionals (Open/Women - see additional rules for Mixed below)

·         First teams will get priority over second teams, and second over third etc.

·         If there is insufficient room for all first teams, places will be awarded in the following order:

o   First teams finishing in the top half of the previous year’s tournament

o   First teams who didn’t enter the previous year’s tournament

o   Remaining first teams in order of their finishing position last year

·         If there are spaces remaining after all first teams have been awarded a space, second teams will be offered places in an order based on finishing position last year, and then third teams and so on

o   Second teams with no finishing position from last year will have a lower priority than those who attended – but still above all third teams (and so on)

If the cut-off happens to fall between 2 or more teams with no finishing position from last year, a lottery will be run between those teams to determine entry.

BUCS Nationals

The closing date and payment date will be as announced by BUCS. Entry is guaranteed for all qualifying teams provided they meet this deadline.

Should any teams fail to take up their spots, the places will be filled by the next-ranked team from one of the qualifying tournaments, with priority among regions determined according to the following (in order):

1.       The region(s) not yet offered an extra place under this process which had the fewest qualification spots originally

2.       The region from which the team dropped out

3.       The strongest regions, i.e.

a.       for Division 1, the region with the highest-ranked relegated team last year – but note that rule 1 means we ignore teams from regions already awarded a dropout-spot.

b.      for Division 2, the region with the highest average finishing position in Division 2 the previous year

c.       for Women’s, the region with the highest average finishing position last year.

4.       A lottery between regions that cannot be separated by the above


Rules will be the same as for BUCS tournaments, with the following additions:

  • Late entries may be accepted, providing that they improve the schedule for others. We will not allow late entries which make the numbers worse.
  • Single-institution teams at a given level (e.g. 1st, 2nd etc) will have priority entry over any teams at the same level who have players from more than one institution.
  • UKU reserve the right to move clubs to a blacklist if any of their teams default from any UKU University tournament at late notice.
    • Blacklisted 1st teams will only get into non-BUCS tournaments if there is space for all 1st teams; 2nd/3rd/4th teams from blacklisted clubs will only get a space if the tournament is undersubscribed – i.e. someone else’s 4th team will get in ahead of your 2nd team.
