First Aid

We encourage anyone who needs a first aid qualification to attend a minimum 1-day Sports First Aid or Emergency First Aid at Work course. We recommend courses run by St John's Ambulance or British Red Cross.

For UKU Coach Registration we will accept courses from other providers, usually based on the awarding organisation. Awarding bodies should be regulated by Ofqual or SQA, Qualsafe, FutureQuals or Pearsons are good examples.

Other First Aid qualifications may also be accepted on a case-by-case basis (examples include, if you work in a medical profession, other NGB first aid courses, County Sport Partnership approved courses*). We will not accept any First Aid training done online. If you are unsure about First Aid qualifications please contact

Below is a list of courses you might want to attend:

Name Length
St John's Ambulance: Basic Sports First Aid 1 Day
St John's Ambulance: Activity First Aid 2 Day
St John's Ambulance: Emergency First Aid at work 1 Day
British Red Cross: First Aid for Sports 1 Day

*Any course must meet our minimum requirements (at least 6 hours, focused on Sports or Emergency First Aid) and will be considered on a case-by-case basis by a UKU committee

Some coaches require a DBS check. If this applies to you please download the safeguarding documents on our Safeguarding Children and Young People page. Complete the self-disclosure form and send to

Please be aware that the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) charges a fee for its service. UKU may cover this cost for people volunteering with us in a role where a check is necessary, GB Junior coaches for example. It is your responsibility if working with children or young people to find out if you need a DBS check. For further information please see the UK Ultimate Safeguarding and Child Protection policy.
