Coaching

CPD

The aim of the CPD section of the UKU Coaching pathway is to offer opportunities for coaches and leaders of any level to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding around different aspects of coaching Ultimate. By creating a non-linear approach to Coach Education we hope to provide more opportunity and greater flexibility for coaches to develop over time. We recognise that a coach's development is organic and often ad-hoc, through many different routes. Coaches learn in a variety of contexts, not just their own sport, developing knowledge and experience in practical application. We hope UKU Coaching CPD will be a growing resource providing opportunity for coaches to talk to each other, learn, and develop their practice. Each session carries a number of UKU Coaching credits. Coaching CPD sessions will be announced via UKU events pages, coaching newsletters and other UKU channels.

  • UKU Forums

Online themed sessions providing opportunities for coaches, leaders and players to learn, discuss and share ideas around different topics.

  • Coach-led / Expert-led Sessions (pilot November 2019)

Practical sessions run by experienced Ultimate coaches or players with expertise in a specific area of the game with an emphasis on how to teach and coach Ultimate skills to others.

  • UKU Coaching Ultimate course (Level 2 core module)

1 day coaching course focused on understanding Ultimate strategy, delivering training sessions and building success over time.

  • UKU Find a Mentor

Mentoring option for coaches who want to complete their Level 2 qualification.

  • Non-UKU Coaching Development options

There are lots of CPD opportunities available from different organisations.

Level 2

32 credits

This is a credit-based qualification. Coaches collect a total of 32 credits from compulsory and optional coaching CPD options.

Coaches must have First Aid and Safeguarding training (NSPCC or UK Coaching courses are suggested) before the Level 2 qualification will be awarded.

This qualification is currently under review. This does not affect anyone who holds a UKU Level 2, nor does it impact those who are in the process of completing the qualification.

UKU Foundation Award

'Working with UK Ultimate has been wonderful.

Trainee teachers described their session as one of the best all year. They also stated that the level of skill and differentiation was `just right' for all participants to progress and achieve, whilst also developing appropriate ideas to take into school.

It was a breath of fresh air to explore another invasion game to develop in upper KS2 other than traditional and dominant games such as football, hockey and netball. Already trainees have used their learning within schools and many have set up clubs which seem to be inspiring children to participate and become more engaged in active learning.'

Julie Pearson, HEA Senior Fellow and Senior Lecturer - Primary Physical Education, Institute of Education, St Mary's University

UKU Level 1

'I'd recommend the UKU Level 1 to any player, whether thinking about coaching, captaining or just deepening their understanding of the game.'

James Burbidge, Ultimate Coach

'Our pre-course discussions were collegiate and progressive; where St Mary's University could share what the trainee teachers needed from the course and discuss the relevance of learning for use in primary schools. Our ideas and needs were incorporated into the delivery of the sessions on the day and the course outcomes were achieved. This level of flexibility and personal application is often lacking from sports courses.'
Julie Pearson, HEA Senior Fellow and Senior Lecturer - Primary Physical Education, Institute of Education, St Mary's University

Mentoring

Mentoring is an important part of coach development. Creating a structure that works for coaches and mentors is important to successful outcomes. Mentoring requires a critical relationship between mentor and mentee which is why we've developed the 'Find a Mentor' scheme.

The framework below that explains the mentoring process. Please read it over before contacting UKU about starting your mentoring journey.

UKU 'Find a Mentor' framework

Getting started

Coaches must have UKU Level 1 and have completed the UKU Coaching Ultimate course before applying for the 'Find a Mentor' scheme.

The coach is responsible for finding their own mentor. Before approaching a mentor the coach should consider whether their prospective mentor fulfils the below criteria, and email coaching@ukultimate.com for confirmation of the mentor's suitability.

A mentor should:

  • have experience of sports coaching or teaching OR experience of leadership / mentoring in Ultimate or another context
  • have at least a basic understanding of Ultimate
  • be interested in coach development
  • be able to offer the time required
  • be able to communicate effectively

After confirmation from UKU, the coach should approach the prospective mentor to ask if they would be interested in volunteering their time. UKU will share support documents with the coach and mentor to explain the mentoring prcoess.

Planned sessions and reflections

In the first instance the coach and mentor should discuss the context in which the coach will be coaching.

The coach should complete a medium-term planning matrix and individual session plans (individual sessions plans are likely to be produced in an ongoing manner as opposed to in advance). All planning should be shared with their mentor.

Planning should include:

  • Medium-term planning for at least 8 sessions, min 1 hour in length
  • Detailed plans for individual sessions
  • Use UKU planning sheets or a similar format
The coach should keep a reflective log focusing on planning, delivery, strengths and weaknesses.

Risk assessments / incident reports

The coach should produce appropriate risk assessments and any relevant incident reports corresponding to the planned / delivered sessions.

Observations and feedback

The mentor must observe the coach at minimum of 2 sessions and provide verbal and written feedback

Portfolio

All paper work produced by the coach and mentor become the coach's mentoring portfolio which is submitted to UKU.

Portfolio submission / final review

Once complete the coach will submit their finished portfolio and arrange final review call with mentor and UKU.
