UKU Junior Open Indoor Nationals 2018 - Final Results & Spirit

Many thanks to all the players, teachers, parents and volunteers who made Junior Open Indoor Nationals such a success. Held at University of Wolverhampton's Walsall Campus on 29th April, the event saw 18 teams competing in a series of hard fought, well spirited games.

The Trophy Final saw a rematch of an earlier pool game, with AirBadgers 1 (St Peter's School, Exeter) pitted against Gonzaga (Gonzaga College, Ranelagh). Despite their earlier defeat, AirBadgers looked calm and confident as they opened up a lead in the first half of the match. A late fightback from from Gonzaga started to close the gap, but came too late to prevent AirBadgers 1 from reclaiming the Trophy.

Meanwhile, an equally exciting Plate Final saw the meeting of Evolution 1 (Aylesford School, Warwick) and Hills Road (Hills Road Sixth Form, Cambridge), two teams who were, respectively, pushed out of the top 8 by a 3-way-tie and a pool featuring both eventual finalists. In the end, Evolution 1 just got the better of play to take home the Plate.

The final standings for the tournament can be found on the ‘Final Standings’ page on the online schedule: https://goo.gl/ZcjKvV

Huge congratulations also go to AirBadgers 2 for their victory in Spirit of the Game! They received a great score on the day from their peers, along with the club's 6th piece of silverware of 2018!

Full spirit scores can be seen below*. However, please note that when entering spirit scores, if you give a team a 4 or a 0, you need to leave a comment to explain why the team deserves such an extreme score. Many teams did do this, but there were a number of scores which had to be removed from the system as they did not have a justification included.

Remember, leaving even a short comment can help your opponents to better understand what they are doing well and where they can improve, so please do try to leave one so that we can all push towards ever-more spirited games! Those teams with comments will receive a copy by email to their team organiser.

*You may have noticed that we have introduced a new colour coding system. This is to more simply indicate how your team has performed in Spirit within each category so that you might be more aware of what is contributing to a possible TRIGGERING spirit score (please see the SOTG policy for more information).

Working away from the average score of 2, your category scores will be highlighted in red if you score below 1.8. Then, for overall spirit scores, your total will be highlighted in dark red should you score 8 or below (which we consider to be particularly low score and one that we encourage you to take action upon), or in orange if your score is between 8 and 9 (which is a score that we think you should take note of and look at further to avoid similar scores in the future).

As the National Governing Body, we wish to see our tournaments played in a positive spirited atmosphere, with all teams and players upholding the Spirit of the Game, and so with this new system we hope it will encourage everyone to remember and uphold their SOTG responsibilities.

We look forward to seeing you at Junior Open Outdoor Nationals, and the Schools National Championships later this year!
