The Rules of Ultimate

The Basics

Ultimate is a team sport played on a rectangular field with end zones at each end.

A goal is scored when a player catches the disc in the end zone that their team is attacking.

Players cannot run with the disc. They move the disc by throwing to teammates.

The defending team takes possession if the attacking team makes a throw which is not caught by a teammate (if the disc hits the floor, goes out of bounds or is intercepted by a defender).

Each new point begins with both teams lining up on the front of opposite end zone lines. The defending team throws the disc to the offense to start play (teams swap the endzone they’re attacking each point).

The winner is the first team to reach a previously decided number of goals, typically fifteen.

The UKU Indoor Rules of Ultimate were amended in September 2023.

WFDF Rules Accreditation
